VWMS students earn Renaissance rewards

Students at Van Wert Middle School are being rewarded for their academics, attendance, and attitude through the Renaissance Program.  The program has been sponsored this year by 33 Van Wert area businesses and civic groups, either through cash donations, coupons, or by offering discounts at their businesses to students who earn a Renaissance card.  Two major sponsors are The Van Wert County Foundation and Cooper Family Foundation.

Since the school operates on trimester grading periods, students have the opportunity to earn three cards in a school year.  A gold, red, or gray card is earned, depending on the level of success throughout each grading period.

Students who earned gold and red cards during the first trimester of the current school year were treated to a movie during the school day at the Van Wert Cinemas. Gray cardholders were given time out of class to watch a movie in the Niswonger Performing Arts Center. After the second trimester, gold and red cardholders earned time out of school to bowl at Olympic Lanes (at right). Gray cardholders had free time from class to do a variety of activities such as dodge ball, play games, watch a movie, and win prizes.  Both outside trips were funded with the donations from area businesses.

Students who earn a Renaissance card during the third trimester will receive a reward during the school day when school resumes in the fall.  The culminating activity for seventh and eighth graders who earn at least two cards is a trip to Cedar Point at the end of the school year. Students ride on charter buses and earn a day out of school. Sixth graders take part in a full day of fun with a variety of activities such as a cookout and outdoor activities.
