Council on Aging chooses ‘Senior Stars’
Council on Aging news
Instead of choosing a senior king and queen, as it has done in years past, the Van Wert County Council on Aging honored 11 “senior stars” this year during its annual Senior Citizens’ Day Banquet held at the Council’s Senior Center on Fox Road.

Those selected as first-ever Senior Stars included community volunteer and Van Wert City Council President Gary Corcoran, former Marsh director and community volunteer Ron Bagley, longtime YWCA travel program director Jean Owens, food pantry and Community Health Professionals volunteers Ilo and Lloyd Marvin, community volunteer and First Ward Councilman John Marshall, former Van Wert City and Vantage school board member and longtime Niswonger Performing Arts Center greeter and volunteer Ken Mengerink, Senior Center volunteers Bill Kuhlman and Helen Whitmore and local historian and longtime Lincoln Highway volunteer Larry Webb.
Council on Aging Executive Director Kevin Matthews lauded each recipient, while C of A Board President Allie Kuhlman handed out medals honoring each recipient for their selection as a senior star.
Prior to the announcement, senior citizens and their guests sat down to a banquet catered by the local Bob Evans restaurant and were entertained by “one-man band” Alan Seibert following the meal and Senior Stars presentation.
