VW golfers struggle in season opener

ARLINGTON — The Van Wert High School varsity golf team struggled in its first match of the 2013 golf season at the Liberty Benton Invitational held at Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Arlington.

The Cougars had a bad day, scoring 366 and finishing 11th out of 12 teams. Adam Jurczyk led the team with a very solid 86, followed by Brandon Hernandez (89), Justin Price (95), Lucas Etzler (96), and Nick Etter (101).

“Sycamore Springs is very difficult from the tips, but we can definitely play it better than we did today,” said Van Wert Coach Jeff Hood. “This team will have to work hard to develop more consistency and avoid the big number triple bogeys and worse.

“It comes down to improving the quality of our bad shots,” Hood added.

The Cougar junior varsity team was in action as well, competing in the Celina JV tournament. Alex Miller finished fifth individually with a 93.

The Cougars returned to action this morning with a home match against Bryan at Willow Bend Country Club.
