City police, firefighter exams scheduled

The Civil Service Commission of the City of Van Wert, Ohio will hold competitive examinations to create eligibility lists for the appointment of police officers to the Van Wert Police Department and firefighters to the Van Wert Fire Department on Saturday, September 7, starting at 9 a.m. at Vantage Career Center, 818 N. Franklin St. in Van Wert. Each department is looking to fill one current vacancy from this examination eligibility list.

All persons wanting to take this examination must file an application with either the police or fire department at the Municipal Building, 515 E. Main St. in Van Wert on or before 4 p.m. Monday, August 26.

Application packets will be available starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, at the Van Wert Police Communications Center, Room 116 (first floor) or the Van Wert Fire Department Watch Room (first floor).

Conditions for Application:

All applicants must be a citizen of the United States of America or have a valid permanent residency card and reside in Ohio. They must also reside in Van Wert County or an adjoining county within the state, or signify in writing their intention to become a Van Wert county or adjoining Ohio county resident upon permanent appointment.

Minimum/Maximum Age – applicants for Original appointment examination to the police and fire departments must have attained the age of 21 years on or before the date of appointment. No one is eligible to receive an original appointment to the police department on or after their 35th birthday.

Pay and Benefits:

Police Department

Starting hourly rate: $17.65; maximum hourly rate: $22.82

Fire Department

Starting hourly rate: $12.30; maximum hourly rate: $16.54 (based on 24-hour shift schedule)

Benefits: City provided health/life/vision Insurance; available dental insurance; vacation/holiday/compensatory time/personal days/sick leave; shift differential pay; uniform allowance; longevity pay; deferred compensation plan with the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund.
