CONVOY — The Crestview Local Board of Education learned during its September meeting on Monday that the district’s new 1:1 computer initiative has started smoothly, while new school year in general has begun on a good note.

According to Superintendent Mike Estes, the 1:1 program, which provides a laptop computer to each student in grades 7-12, went smoothly. “Kids seem to love them and they’re already being used extensively in the classroom,” Estes said.

Middle School Principal Dave Bowen talked about the professional development waiver day on Monday, September 23, while student picture day for the high school and middle school is scheduled for the next day, September 24.

Bowen also mentioned that the first meeting in connection with the eighth graders’ trip to Washington, D.C., will be on Tuesday, October 1.

Elementary Principal Kathy Mollenkopf reported that, as required by law, parents of students not on track to meet the third grade reading guarantee would be notified by September 30.

The health portion of kindergarten screening will be held this Wednesday, September 11, according to Mollenkopf, with other elementary health screenings set for Tuesday, October 5.

A district state report card strategic planning committee will meet on September 11, Estes said, while the district’s administrative council will have its first meeting of the new school year on Thursday.

The board also learned that school bus bids would be opened on Wednesday, October 16, while candidates would also be sought for a half-time custodial position.

Estes said he would also be speaking to township trustees and village councils in the Crestview district about the renewal levy on the November general election ballot.

Also on Monday, the board:

  • Approved Kristie McCormick and Alil Sawmiller as half-time prom/junior class coordinators for the current school year.
  • Approved Carl Etzler as the new head softball coach for this year.
  • Approved a memorandum of understanding with the Crestview Employees Association concerning the district’s academic incentive.
  • Went into executive session to discuss personnel, with no action taken afterward.

The next meeting of the Crestview Local Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, October 21, at 6 p.m. in the district boardroom.
