Club Swing to open in Van Wert
Friday night, March 18 will mark the opening of Club Swing in Van Wert. Unfortunately, it will be short-lived, as it will open for only one night and then move on down the road. This Club Swing is actually operated by five singers who call themselves Five By Design. They have their own house band that will swing with the best of them, while their repertoire includes everything from Benny Goodman’s “Bugle Call Rag” to Louis Prima’s blockbuster “Sing, Sing, Sing”. They also sprinkle in Cole Porter and Spike Jones, among others.
There will be much more than just the spectacular music mentioned above at this next concert and stage show at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio. Five By Design is a group of five vocalists who have been entertaining audiences across the globe since 1986.
“Club Swing” is a show that premiered with the Baltimore Symphony in 2001. It tells the story of The Stork Club, The Copa, Cocoanut Grove, and other hot spots that experienced great entertainment during the great swing years of roughly 1937-1955.
To set the stage: sadly, the once magnificent Club Swing is the only one left standing and even now the wrecking ball is poised to strike her down. The story of “Club Swing” is about the club’s former mixologist, Joe Sullivan, trying to prevent this tragedy from occurring.
A long forgotten neon sign flares to life illuminating palm trees and the art deco bar, magically restoring Club Swing to her former splendor. Club Swing celebrates the songs, events, and personalities that defined American popular culture during the Swing era.
To relive these memorable times and experience an evening of tragedy, splendor and certainly great music, call the box office (419.238.6722) to reserve your seat or go online at www.npacvw.org and order your ticket now. This is the third of our Community Concert Series and proves to be an exciting night. If you didn’t get in the Community Concert Series this year, buy your single ticket now and don’t miss out on this one.
The last of the four Community Concerts will be April 19 when the amazing DePue Brothers Band brings Bluegrass to the NPAC. It will also be when we announce and preview a whole new Community Concert Series for 2011-12. You won’t want to miss it!
Also, if you need a few, well, maybe a lot of laughs, don’t forget about the rollicking Gilbert & Sullivan Production of The Pirates of Penzance on March 25. It’s coming up real soon and tickets are currently on sale. This is a great family show filled with dancing, acting, comedy, merriment and, of course, a lot of great music from an 18-piece pit orchestra and singers/actors from New York City.
FINÉ.
