Cougars lose to Defiance in volleyball

It was a tough match for the Van Wert Lady Cougar volleyball team, as the Cougs lost in four games to Defiance in a Western Buckeye League match-up on Thursday. Game scores were 15-25, 25-20, 19-25 and 12-25.

The Cougars are now 13-6 on the season and 4-3 in the WBL.

Varsity stats leaders are as follows:

Serving – Riley Jones, 23/24; Amanda Coplin, 12/13.

Hitting – Coplin, five kills; Alexa Dunlap, four kills; and Taylor Doidge, Landrie Koontz and Alexis Dowdy, three kills apiece.

Defensive digs – Cheyenne Handy, 11 digs; Dunlap, McKenna Merkle, Claire Gamble, nine digs each.

Setting – Coplin, nine assists; Jones, eight assists.

The junior varsity team defeated Defiance in three games, while the freshman team lost in three.

Van Wert will next be in action on Monday, when the Cougars travel to Antwerp to take on the Archers in a non-conference match.
