Monsters! at the Wassenberg Art Center!

By Hope Wallace

The 36th Annual Wassenberg Art Center Photography exhibit received some creepy company when the Photography exhibit opened today. In honor the season, eight finely detailed sculptures by “Mr. E” are also on display. These amazing sculptures spotlight the creepy creatures and characters we all know and love – the Mummy, dragons, werewolves, etc.

Visitors will be fascinated by the details – and the whimsy — in these sculptures. For example, a dragon disguised as a tree towers over a picnic table – complete with catsup bottle. Where are the picnickers? We can only surmise they were good with catsup! And, in another sculpture, a mummy with trailing bandages is going out to check – well, we won’t give away the fun.

Mr. E is a self-taught sculptor who spends hours carving closed-cell foam material and adding found objects to complete the scene. Stop in and check out his amazingly detailed scary scenes. We’ll even give you candy, IF you survive.

Monsters! will be on view during the remainder of the 36th Annual Photography Exhibit which ends on Sunday Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. Exhibit hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 1–5 p.m. The art center is closed on Mondays.

This will be the final exhibit to be housed in the Wassenberg home at 643 S. Washington St., Van Wert. The 36th Annual Wassenberg Photography Exhibit is brought to you by Citizens National Bank, the Van Wert County Foundation and the Wassenberg Camera Club.

Calls-for-entry for the 24th Annual Artist’s Sale/Exhibit will be sent out soon with artwork scheduled for check-in on Nov. 9–10 from 1–5 p.m. Artists, for a nominal artist fee of $20 may enter this non-juried exhibit and display their work until Dec. 20. If you are interested in obtaining a prospectus give us a call and we will put you on the list to receive a copy. Cash awards are presented for several categories.
