“Machinery/tools” is competition theme
By Rex Dolby

The Wassenberg Camera Club will hold its only meeting of the month on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Wassenberg Art Center’s new location at 214 S. Washington St. Meeting time is set for 7 p.m. and will be held in the conference room located on the south west side of the building. This will be a double draw since it will be our first meeting in the new facility as well as holding competition in prints and slides. Machinery/Tools will be the theme that evening.
Machinery may be defined as an integrated system of parts powered by hand, water, wind, steam, gas, diesel, or electricity to do a single or series of tasks. That pretty well opens up the field to whatever turns your crank. There should be a large number of entries based on this part of the theme alone.
Tools, however, are the second part of the theme. We may first think of tools as hand-held individual units such as hammers, wrenches, or crowbars, but portable drills, saws, and sanders for example, also fit the tool category. The option for pictures has now grown considerably.
Before we start, however, ponder the many fields that use tools. There would be construction, manufacturing, maintenance and repair, agriculture, research and design, medical and rehabilitation, and security to name a few-and most of these have their own specialized tools and machinery to do their jobs.
Shooting machinery will probably involve larger units, so pick angles that not only show the machine, but also try to show what it does. Since tools will be smaller units, think of yourself as a photographer for a tool catalog. It’s a still life situation, requiring good placement of the tools and lighting to show them off.
This should prove to be an exciting meeting and include plans for the annual Christmas dinner and year-end judging in December. See ya.
