PORTLAND, Ind. — The Cougar swim team traveled to Portland, Ind., for the annual Jay County High School invitational, involving 10 teams from Indiana and Ohio.  Both the boys and girls teams finished in fourth place.

Celina took first place for the boys and Jay County emerged as the girls’ champion, with East Central High School (Dearborn County, Ind.) taking runner up in the girls’ and boys’ events.   Other schools participating (in order of finish in the boys’ standings) included Bellmont, Ada, Muncie Southside, Coldwater, Fort Recovery and Marion Local.

In total, the Cougar boys and girls scored in 47 of the 52 entered events.

All five boys’ relay teams scored.  The best finishes were fourth place by the 200-yard medley  (Dan Silette, Eric Easley, Sam Easley, Adam Jurczyk), and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (Jacob Scheidt, Sam Easley, Jurczyk, Eric Easley)  teams.  The 200-yard freestyle “A” relay (Josh Overholt, Cade Fleming, Silette, Scheidt) earned sixth place. The “B” 200-yard freestyle relay took 12th and the 200-yard medley relay teams scored, finishing in 13th place.

All five girls relay teams also scored points for the Cougars.  The best finish was recorded by the 400-yard freestyle, with Holly Hammond, Katie Trittschuh, Peyton Fleming, and Hannah Stemen taking fifth place.  The 200-yard freestyle relay, with Bethany Fast, Fleming, Katie Trittschuh, Andi Foster, claimed ninth place.  The 200-yard medley relay team took seventh place; members were Stemen, Fast, Karlyn Koontz, and Holly Hammond.  Additionally, the girls 200-yard “B” freestyle relay (Landrie Koontz, Madison Pauquette, Haley Richardson, Mackenzie Agler) and the 400-yard “B” relay (Foster, Agler, Fleming, Koontz) both scored 12th place finishes.

The next meet for the Cougars will be a dual meet at Defiance High School on January 21.
