Lady Cougs beat Lima Central Catholic

The Van Wert Lady Cougars defeated Lima Central Catholic 50-43 in a non-conference girls’ basketball game held Tuesday in the Cougar’s Den.

Alexa Dunlap led the Cougars with 12 points, while Cheyenne Handy added 9 points for the Cougars. LCC was led by Meredith Shepherd’s 12 points, while Kayla Verhoff scored 11 points for the Lady Thunderbirds.

Van Wert led by a basket, 15-13, at the end of the first quarter, but the Cougars ratcheted down the defense in the second stanza, forcing LCC into turnovers that Van Wert converted into points and a 12-point halftime lead, 30-18.

The Lady T-Birds returned the favor in the third quarter, outscoring Van Wert 15-6 to get within three points, 36-33, at the three-quarter mark in the game.

But the Cougars kept their cool and finished out the contest with a 14-10 fourth quarter to secure the victory.

With the win, Van Wert goes to 16-4 on the year, while the T-Birds fall to 13-5.

There was no junior varsity contest.
