Weir seeks Council president nomination

Submitted information

Pete Weir, a candidate for the Republican nomination for president of Van Wert City Council, isn’t one to just sit by and watch. He’s all about action. During his two years on Van Wert City Council, he spearheaded the effort to get a streetlight at Fox Road and Shannon Street, he was instrumental in the efforts to enforce two-hour downtown parking, he initiated the analysis of residential streets to be paved and he responded to every citizen’s call with action.

Recently, Weir, as president of the Van Wert County Humane Society, has been coordinating efforts to restore the Van Wert County Humane Shelter and its associated house, and also participating in the 2015 Van Wert Area Chamber of Commerce leadership class.

His previously held positions include Van Wert County Regional Airport board member, Van Wert County Regional Planning Committee member, Van Wert Economic Advisory Committee member and Van Wert County Port Authority board member.

A man who enjoys being active in the community, he’s a member of the Van Wert Optimist Club, American Legion Post 178, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, 40 et 8, Moose Lodge 1320, Van Wert Masonic Temple, and the Elks Lodge 1197.

Weir is currently the Trade and Industry programs manager for Vantage Career Center’s Adult Education program.

“Van Wert is my home town,” Pete says. “I love my town. I originally got involved with Council because I wanted to help find solutions for issues such as trash, junk vehicles, parking and condemned housing.

“I want to put that same energy and leadership into being your Van Wert City Council president and ensure that our City Council concentrates on improving our community,” he added. “This is a job I can do, and do well.”

The Council president’s position provides leadership and direction to Council to follow proper protocol, develops public notices, presents public petitions and assigns issues to various committees.

Weir said he feels his 20 years of military experience, five years of government employment, three degrees, and two years of City Council experience show that he is the best choice for Council president.

Polls are open now for Republicans wanting to vote early, while May 5 is Primary Election Day.
