Knights down unbeaten VW in softball

CONVOY — The Crestview girls’ varsity softball team, which has struggled at times early in the season, got a boost with a hard-fought 6-5 non-conference victory Wednesday over previously unbeaten Van Wert. The After trailing 2-0 in the first inning, the Lady Knights got the short game going in the third inning, putting on a bunting display that helped them score four runs.

In the fifth inning, Maddie Etzler led off with an inside-the-park home run to give the Knights 5-2 lead.

The Cougars weren’t out of it, though, as they came back with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 5 apiece.

Crestview’s Maddie Preston started off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left, with Etzler bunting her to second. Dani Hicks then came up with the game-winning hit to score Preston from second base.

Preston got the win on the mound for the Knights while Etzler led the Knights with two hits.
