Low-Light Photography is discussion topic

By Rex Dolby

“Low Light Photography” will be the topic of discussion when the Van Wert Area Photography Club next meets at 7 p.m. on June 11 at 114 S. Race St. in Van Wert.

Low light photography refers to occasions where the subject is inadequately illuminated or well illuminated, but the background is dark.  Situations such as concerts, events around a campfire, late evening activities, night activities, and sporting events would call for some special camera settings. Those settings will be discussed at the meeting.

The question about how to keep from over exposing a well-lit area when the background around it is dark will also be addressed.  Many events do not permit flash photography, or you are positioned so far from the subject, the flash would not make any difference.  Those conditions call for special camera settings or, depending on the camera, program settings.

Some readers may have observed that the camera features on the smart phones take some very sharp, well exposed photos, with enough data recorded to produce a good print. The question of purchasing a smart phone versus a good point-and-shoot camera will also be addressed.

Anyone having some low light photos they’d like to show for discussion or evaluation are invited to put them on a jump drive for projection that evening.

On a side note, the new By-Laws have been printed and copies will be available to all individuals who have paid their dues in full.
