Hernandez medals, Cougar golfers fall

The Van Wert Cougar golf team opened its Western Buckeye League competition at home on Monday against the Wapakoneta Redskins at Willow Bend Country Club.
Jared Hernandez was the match medalist with a 35, followed by runner-up medalist Jared Miller of the Redskins, who finished with a 38.
Jacob Covey shot a 46, closely followed by Colton Deschner with a 47, Carter Eikenbary with a 52, while Nathan Bidlack shot a 63.
“We are working on team and individual goals,” said Van Wert Coach Kim Doidge. “Tonight the team did what I asked of them. I am proud of their hard work.”
Hard work is beginning to pay off, as the Cougar golfers shot 27 strokes better than their last dual match, although Wapakoneta won 161 to 180.
The Cougars are at home against the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans on Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m.
