Van Wert County government sustained a tragic loss Wednesday morning with the death of Van Wert Solid Waste Management District Manager George Brake, who was killed in a traffic accident at the intersection of Mendon and State roads on the southwest side of the county.
Brake was pronounced dead at the scene by County Coroner Dr. Scott Jarvis from injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred at approximately 8:23 a.m. Wednesday. He was 58.
According to Van Wert County sheriff’s deputies, Brake was driving a 1971 Volkswagen Beetle north on Mendon Road when his vehicle was struck in the driver’s side door by a 2001 Ford F-250 operated by Babette Stewart, 37, of Van Wert, who was driving east on State Road. Both vehicles ended up in a yard on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Brake was transported to Van Wert County Hospital by Brickner Ambulance Service, while Stewart, who also suffered injuries in the crash, was also taken to the hospital by Brickner’s.
Investigators said both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Sheriff Thomas Riggenbach said investigation into the accident is continuing.
Assisting at the scene were the Ohio City Fire and EMS Department, Straight-line Body & Paint and 2A’s.
