Evelyn Jones Hoverman, 96, passed away in her sleep on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Hearth & Home in Van Wert.

Husbands Thomas Ellis Jones and Archie C. Hoverman preceded her in death, as well as sisters Leota (Floyd) Barcus and Mary (Earl) Fiock, and brothers Gaylord and Wilbur (Ruth) Stemen.

She is survived by her son, Colonel Thomas L. “Tom” Jones, United States Marine Corps (retired), of Van Wert; her daughter-in-law, Connie (Ries) Knittle Jones; her granddaughter, Jennifer Jones Boykin of Richmond, Virginia; and two great-granddaughters, Sydney Elizabeth Boykin and Madison Anne Boykin.

Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Francis Jones Backensto of San Diego, California, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was born in Ridge Township, Van Wert County, on November 5, 1919, the daughter of Margaret Pierce Stemen and Issac T. Stemen, who both preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Union Local High School Class of 1937. She married Ellis Jones on December 21, 1939, and worked with him farming, raising turkeys, and homemaking in York Township. In 1960, she took a position as an accountant at the Middle Point Equity Elevator. She continued to work there following Ellis’ death in 1976, until she retired and married Archie Hoverman.

Evelyn enjoyed fishing, bowling, card games, reading, and people. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and a lifelong member of Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Venedocia Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, and an hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia.
