Van Wert stayed close in the first quarter, trailing by five points, 14-9, but a 22-4 second-quarter run by the Lady Thunderbirds put them up by 23, 36-13, at the half.

The Cougars did better in the second half, outscoring LCC 31-24 in the half, but couldn’t overcome their disastrous second quarter.

Abby Jackson led Van Wert with 12 points, while Ally Jackson scored 7 for the Cougars. Cassidy Meyers was held to 4 points on the night. LCC had three players in double figures, led by Natalie Snider’s 23 points. Samantha Koenig added 12 points, while Madison Stolly scored 11 for the Lady T-Birds.

The young Cougars are now 0-21 for the year.

The Van Wert junior varsity squad almost pulled off an upset, losing by just a basket, 35-33, to the LCC JVs. The Cougar JVs are now 2-18 on the year.

Crestview’s Lady Knights used a balanced offensive effort to defeat non-conference opponent Wayne Trace 59-49 on Monday and improve their record to 15-4 on the year.

Emily Bauer led the Knights with 15 points, while Paige Motycka, Claire Zaleski, and Brady Guest each scored 11 for Crestview. Lyvia Black had 9 points for the Knights, with all of her scoring coming on three-pointers.

Erin Mohr led the Raiders — and all scorers — with 17 points, while Danae Myers added 12 points for Wayne Trace.
