Field trips to Waste Mgt, water treatment

Learning about local agencies and how they benefit our community is a major part of the 6th Grade curriculum. 6th Grade students at the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School recently visited the Solid Waste Management Facility, the Van Water Treatment Plant and the Waste Water Treatment Plant.

At the Solid Waste Management Facility they learned how our community supports recycling. George Brake explained how compost is made as well as how recyclables are sorted and sold. The Solid Waste Management Facility
does a great job of saving our resources and giving back to our community with free mulch, wood, and books.

At the Water treatment Plant, Don Lippi explained how water taken from

Town Creek is filtered and treated before being used and consumed by residents of Van Wert. At the Waste Water Treatment Plant Brandon Fetzer explained to the students how waste water is cleaned and treated before going back into Town Creek. Field trips such as these give our students a greater appreciation for the local community and also help them understand the processes involved.
