‘It’s a Girl Thing’ event provides info

Local girls ages 8-13 met with local medical professionals to discuss the journey to womanhood during the “It’s a Girl Thing” event held recently. Approximately 50 girls accompanied by their mothers or trusted friends learned about healthy habits and attitudes and staying safe, as well as the physical and emotional changes associated with womanhood. Local pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Hohman, Certified Nurse Practitioner Shane Gerber and Registered Nurse Lisa Matthews led the talks.

“This event has always been a great opportunity to talk with young women about the changes associated with puberty,” Dr. Hohman said. “We shared information about womanhood in a fun environment.”

Holly Brinkman attended It’s a Girl Thing with her 9-year-old daughter, Taylor. “As the mother of two girls, I believe in taking every opportunity to become informed; which will make the upcoming years as smooth as possible,” Brinkman said. “A big ‘thank you’ goes out to those who made it possible.”

Support for this program was provided by the Violence and Injury Prevention Program, Bureau of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction, Office of Healthy Ohio, Ohio Department of Health and The University of Toledo AHEC Program, LAHEC, Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert Medical Services, family and local contributors.
