Steyer, Bretz to wrestle in state tourney

NORWALK — Two Van Wert High School wrestlers who qualified for Division II district competition in Norwalk have advanced to this week’s State Wrestling Tournament in Columbus.

Junior Isaiah Bretz finished second in the 138 pound weight class, while sophomore Gabe Steyer captured third in the 132 pound weight class. The top four finishers in each weight class qualified for the State Tournament.

Bretz was pinned by Medina Buckeye’s Mike Clark in 2:40 in the district finals, while Steyer earned a major decision (10-0) over Emileo Calderon of Perkins.

Steyer (37-4) will wrestle in Thursday’s preliminary round against Norwood senior Casey Ragle (38-5), while Bretz (41-6) will square off against against Maxx Peters (31-6), a senior from Urichsville Claymont.

Action will begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday, at the Jerome Schottenstein Center.
