{"id":101565,"date":"2018-04-19T07:35:36","date_gmt":"2018-04-19T12:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=101565"},"modified":"2018-04-19T07:35:36","modified_gmt":"2018-04-19T12:35:36","slug":"latta-cybersecurity-bill-okd-by-subpanel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2018\/04\/19\/latta-cybersecurity-bill-okd-by-subpanel\/","title":{"rendered":"Latta cybersecurity bill OK&#8217;d by subpanel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>VW independent\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u00a0&#8212; The Energy and Commerce (E&amp;C)\u00a0Subcommittee\u00a0on Energy recently voted to approve legislation authored by U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) to\u00a0improve the nation\u2019s grid security and resiliency in the face of cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/115\/bills\/hr5239\/BILLS-115hr5239ih.pdf\">H.R. 5239<\/a>, the Cyber Sense Act,\u00a0would create a voluntary Department of Energy \u201cCyber Sense\u201d program that would test the cyber security of products and technologies for use in the bulk-power system. It would require the Secretary of Energy to keep a related database on the products. This would aid electric utilities that are evaluating products and their potential to cause harm to the electric grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad actors are looking to weaken the American energy sector in any way possible,\u201d\u00a0said Latta.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve seen that with recent cyberattacks coming from Russia that have targeted our nation\u2019s electric grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve long been a proponent of modernizing and updating our aging grid for a number of reasons, but improving cyber security is one of the most critical,\u201d Latta added. \u201cThe Cyber Sense Act will let electric utilities make more informed decisions about the cyber security of the products they are purchasing, increasing resiliency for the entire grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Latta spoke on the legislation before the E&amp;C Subcommittee on Energy.
