{"id":102837,"date":"2018-05-18T07:59:13","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T12:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=102837"},"modified":"2018-05-19T08:19:21","modified_gmt":"2018-05-19T13:19:21","slug":"vwhs-seniors-recognized-during-awards-convocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2018\/05\/18\/vwhs-seniors-recognized-during-awards-convocation\/","title":{"rendered":"VWHS gives awards to 2018 graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>VW independent\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Van Wert High School recently held its Senior Awards Convocation\u00a0for the Class of 2018 in the Saltzgaber Music Hall of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center.\u00a0Seniors were honored and recognized for their academic and co-curricular achievements garnered over the past four years.\u00a0As a class, seniors earned approximately $2.3 million calculated over a four-year period in scholarship opportunities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102844\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-102844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/VWHS-Awards-Convocation-Departmental-Awards-5-2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>VWHS departmental award winners\u00a0include (front row, from the left) Kaylee McPhail, Art Award; Kaylin Bledsoe, Spanish Award; Cassidy Meyers, Mass Media Award; Briana Kesler, German Award; Mikayla Hernandez, Science and Language Arts awards; (back row) Anna Reichert, Vocal Music Award; Laine Spoor, Family and Consumer Science Award; Chloe Brake, Biomedical Science Award; Steele Stabler, Instrumental Music Award; Michael Etter, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Project Lead the Way Pre-Engineering awards; and Jared Hernandez, Business and Computers Award (more photos will be in later today)<\/strong>. <em>VWHS photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>VWHS Departmental Award winners\u00a0are as follows (also see photo at right): Kaylee McPhail, Art Award; Kaylin Bledsoe, Spanish Award; Cassidy Meyers, Mass Media Award; Briana Kesler, German Award; Mikayla Hernandez, Science and Language Arts Awards;Anna Reichert, Vocal Music Award; Laine Spoor, Family and Consumer Science Award; Chloe Brake, Biomedical Science Award; Steele Stabler, Instrumental Music Award; Michael Etter, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Project Lead the Way Pre-Engineering Awards; and Jared Hernandez, Business and Computers Award.<\/p>\n<p>Other awards given during the convocation include the following:<\/p>\n<p>Tom Hittle \u201cHero\u201d Award\u00a0is\u00a0given in memory of Mr. Hittle to a student who has displayed an \u201cI Can\u201d attitude in situations that they have been given.\u00a0Gavin Smith was the winner of this award.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Adolph and Letitia Weck Memorial Scholarship\u00a0is awarded to two students who rank scholastically in the top third of their class.\u00a0Students have completed an application and were selected by VWHS Faculty Committee on Awards.\u00a0Recipients of this scholarship were Kylee Bagley and Cassidy Meyers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The\u00a0Shirley Johns Hart Memorial Scholarship\u00a0has been established\u00a0in memory of\u00a0Shirley Anne Johns Hart by her family.\u00a0Mrs. Hart was a graduate of Van Wert High School, Class of 1953.\u00a0This scholarship is based on academic achievement and financial need and is chosen by the Faculty Committee on Awards.\u00a0Recipients were Briana Kesler and Abby Lawson.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Margaret Shaffer Maney Memorial Music Scholarship\u00a0recognizes a student who plans to major in the area of music.\u00a0Dr. Dondra Maney presented the award this year to Anna Reichert.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0John Fox Maney Memorial Business Scholarship\u00a0recognizes a student who plans to major in business and has a desire to see the Van Wert community prosper.\u00a0Dr. Kevin Maney presented this scholarship to Brayden Cox.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Brian J. Galbreath Memorial Scholarship\u00a0was presented to Rebekah Fast.\u00a0The Galbreath Memorial recognizes a student who has been involved in either the instrumental or vocal music program, played a high school sport, has worked throughout high school, and has been active in their church.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert Service Pack Scholarship\u00a0is sponsored by the Van Wert Service Club and recognizes students who have demonstrated community involvement through service projects and have been members of VWHS Service Pack.\u00a0Rebekah Fast and Cassidy Meyers were recipients this year.<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy Meyers was also the recipient of the\u00a0American Red Cross High School Scholarship,\u00a0which is given to a student who donated and helped with the annual blood drive.<\/p>\n<p>Principal \u201cCougar Pride\u201d Awards\u00a0were given by VWHS Principal Bob Priest to Cassidy Meyers and Brock Blythe.\u00a0Students are chosen by Mr. Priest based on their involvement in school and extracurricular activities, character, respect, and school pride.<\/p>\n<p>The Gaylord Leslie Golf Scholarship,\u00a0named in honor of Mr. Gaylord Leslie, is given to a senior member of the Van Wert High School golf team.\u00a0This year\u2019s recipient is Jared Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p>TheChuck Thompson Scholar Athlete Award,\u00a0named in honor of Mr. Chuck Thompson, a 1975 VWHS graduate, for students excelling in athletics and academics, was awarded to Cassidy Meyers and Michael Etter.<\/p>\n<p>TheYoung Women of Christian Leadership and Community Involvement\u00a0Scholarship\u00a0was presented to Cassidy Meyers and Madison Turnwald.<\/p>\n<p>The Van Wert Rotary Scholarship\u00a0has two recipients: Rebekah Fast and Michael Etter.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Central Insurance Companies Educational and Charitable Foundation Scholarship\u00a0awarded two scholarships this year to Van Wert High School students Cassidy Meyers and Briana Kesler. This award is a $5,000 per year scholarship, which is renewable for four years.\u00a0The scholarship was presented by Foundation Trustee and Central Insurance President Bill Purmort.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s\u00a0Black Inc.\u00a0Business Proficiency\u00a0runner\u2013up was awarded to Selena Witten. The award was presented by Central Insurance Companies Employment Manager Carly Fortman.\u00a0Black Inc. is a competition organized by the Van Wert County Foundation. Students from six area schools were invited to compete in a series of business tests to judge their proficiency at Central Insurance Company.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Black Inc. Outstanding Van Wert County Student Award\u00a0was presented to Mikayla Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p>Anita Zuber, Scholastic Bowl Advisor recognized seniors Wesley Wagner and Chloe Brake for their accomplishments on the Scholastic Bowl Team\u00a0this school year.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Psi Iota Xi Scholarship\u00a0is given by the local chapter to a student entering the fields of speech and hearing, art, music, or literature. Recipients were Cloey Spry, Anna Reichert, and Erin Gemmer.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Ralph E. McCuddy Memorial Scholarship\u00a0is given in his honor by his family to a student who is majoring in a science field.\u00a0The recipients of this year\u2019s award were Cassidy Meyers and Kylee Bagley.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert presented awards to the winners of the annual\u00a0American Legion Government\u00a0Tests, whichis given to all Van Wert County high school seniors that want to participate.\u00a0The high scorers for Van Wert High School and the county were Dustin Robison and Kaylin Bledsoe.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Awards\u00a0were presented to Steele Stabler, Madison Turnwald and Eli Rager.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert Federation of Teachers Scholarship\u00a0is given to students entering the field of education.\u00a0Recipients this year were Kaylin Bledsoe, Maddux McCray, Miranda Sinning, and Julia Springer.<\/p>\n<p>The recipients of the\u00a0Junior Achievement Scholarship,\u00a0which is given to students involved in the Junior Achievement Economics class, were Nicole Clay (2017 winner), Abby Lawson, Jared Hernandez, and Jonathan Lee.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Brandon Burlsworth Character Award\u00a0is given to a football player who displays character and sportsmanship.\u00a0James Acquaviva is the 2018 recipient.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Captain George L. Purmont Prize\u00a0was presented to Erin Gemmer, Camryn Nouza, Wesley Wagner, Cloey Spry, and Madison Turnwald.<\/p>\n<p>Schrader Realty\u00a0sponsored a scholarship this year to a Van Wert High School student.\u00a0The recipient was Selena Witten.<\/p>\n<p>Excellence in Theater Award\u00a0was presented to Mikayla Hernandez and Anna Reichert.<\/p>\n<p>VWHS German teacher Eugene Aufderhaar awarded the American Association of Teachers of German Senior Award to Maddux McCray.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Senior 4-H Endowment Scholarship\u00a0was given to Abbey Bradford, Erin Richardson, and Korey Oechsle.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Van Wert County Hospital Biomedical Science Scholarship\u00a0was founded to support the growth and development of new talent across all sectors of the human health care industry. This renewable scholarship was presented to a student who has taken four years of the Biomedical program at Van Wert High School.\u00a0The scholarship recipient this year was Chloe Brake.<\/p>\n<p>The V.H.
