The donations were in honor of June being National Turkey Lovers\u2019 Month.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104502\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cooper-Farms-donates-turkeys-7-2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"277\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>A Cooper Farms employee loads turkey meat onto a truck for distribution to area food banks.<\/strong> <em>Cooper Farms photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"default\">\u201cOne of the main points of Turkey Lovers\u2019 Month is to encourage people to eat more turkey,\u201d said Gary Cooper, chief operating officer of Cooper Farms. \u201cIf we can do that and also help those in need get quality protein at the same time, it\u2019s a win-win for everyone.\u201d<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\">The donations were made primarily to local summer lunch programs. For some families, the lunch provided may be the only meal eaten during the day. Many of these summer lunch programs provide not only a meal, but activities to keep children active during their summer.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\">\u201cThe summer lunch programs that the local food banks and organizations put on are just tremendous,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cThere are far too many hungry people in our area. Knowing this food is going to positively impact these families is a tremendous feeling.\u201d<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\">An estimated 46 million turkeys are consumed at Thanksgiving. However, two-thirds of the turkey produced annually is consumed during months other than November, proving turkey can be a go-to protein all year long.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\">\u201cWe\u2019re really trying to share that turkey isn\u2019t just for Thanksgiving,\u201d said Cooper. \u201cTurkey can be used in a variety of ways just like any other meat, and it\u2019s usually a healthier choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><!--more-->Cooper Farms celebrated Turkey Lovers\u2019 Month at its four locations by holding various activities, like grilling turkey burgers for team members, as well as giveaways and contests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VW independent\/submitted information OAKWOOD &#8212; Cooper Farms recently donated more than 800 cases, over 13,600 pounds, of turkey deli meat to food banks in the surrounding area.
