{"id":106469,"date":"2018-08-30T07:55:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T12:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=106469"},"modified":"2018-08-30T07:55:12","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T12:55:12","slug":"vantage-students-give-to-local-food-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2018\/08\/30\/vantage-students-give-to-local-food-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Vantage students give to local food bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>VW independent\/submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n<p>INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana &#8212; Vantage Career Center academic instructor Susan Farr and her academic class, with the partnership of the Vantage FFA chapter, has been awarded a Yearlong Living to Serve Grant in the amount of $3,000.<\/p>\n<p>The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support yearlong service-learning projects that address needs related to community safety; environmental responsibility; hunger, health and nutrition; and community engagement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106471\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106471\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Vantage-FFA-members-8-2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"383\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Shown are (front row, from the left) Nickolas Kreischer and Garrett Breininger; (middle row)\u00a0Dylan Ellerbrock, Joseph Klausing, Andrew Newsome, Rylee Phillips, Ashley Thrasher, and Nathan Snyder; (back row) Jonathan Caulfield, James Boyd, Jakob Jones, and Casey Etter.<\/strong> <em>Vantage photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Farr\u2019s students, along with the Vantage FFA, presented the idea to Vantage administration, detailing plans that help address local hunger by developing a school garden with indoor and outdoor learning opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The overall goal is to raise a variety of vegetables and donate the harvest to food pantries in the students\u2019 home districts. A portion of the harvest will also be used within the school. Both academic and lab instructors will work with embedding curriculum to use this as a learning tool and to enhance each of the local Vantage communities.<\/p>\n<p>The National FFA Organization Living to Serve program provided over $300,000 to FFA chapters in 33 states.
