Vantage Career Center has been granted a fire charter and is ready to begin offering firefighting classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interim Ohio Technical Center Director Kit Tyler shared the news during Thursday night\u2019s meeting of the Vantage Board of Education, and she noted there are no other fire charter programs nearby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur first class is going to start in February and we already have it filled,\u201d Tyler said. \u201cOur next class will begin in September.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superintendent Rick Turner informed the board he\u2019ll soon meet with state legislators in Columbus to advocate for career technical education in the new biennium budget, and to promote Vantage and the way the career center is serving high school and adult students, along with the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to that trip and we think it will be very productive,\u201d Turner said. \u201cIt\u2019s very dynamic right now in Columbus with the new administration and governor and all of the jockeying going on for leadership positions, so it should be interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turner also praised board members for their efforts as part of the Ohio School Boards Association\u2019s School Board Recognition month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to thank each of you as board members for your time and dedication to Vantage as well as your associate school,\u201d Turner said. “We recognize the commitment it takes to serve on a school board and each of you is serving on two boards of education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each board member was presented with a certificate and a beverage holder made by students in Vantage\u2019s Construction Equipment Technology program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his report to the board, High School Director Tony Unverferth said the Toss-A-Toy program, led by Amy Grothouse, raised over $4,000. He also noted sophomore visit day is scheduled for February 1, with approximately 800 students expected to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treasurer Laura Peters told the board that she\u2019s renewing the school\u2019s bulk mail permit, which should result in substantial savings on postage costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Board members accepted the resignations of OTC nursing instructor Linda Arnold and welding instructor Lonnie Schlosser, and the board hired Robert Herber, Russell Moorman, and Craig King as firefighter instructors; Michael McClain as a police academy instructor; Hunter Blankemeyer as a welding instructor; Robert Ward as a machining instructor and customized training instructor; and Charles Peters as CDL training manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board approved Step Into Your Future supplemental contracts for Miriam Owens, Annette Klinger, Jerry Robinson, Mike Miller, Larry Regedanz, Gary Cearns and Brenda Wurst. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board also accepted a grant of $59,150 from the Van Wert County Foundation\/Rothacker-Lampe Bequest to purchase electronic items; approved an out-of-state field trip for Ag and Industrial Power Technology instructor Mike Miller and his class, and Construction Equipment Technology instructor Dave DeLano and his students to the Fort Wayne Farm Show on January 16; approved the Vantage Career Center Emergency Operations Plan, and appointed Turner as Vantage\u2019s representative on the Putnam County Tax Incentive Review Council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Thursday\u2019s regular meeting, the board held its annual tax budget hearing and organizational meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pat Baumle was re-elected as board president and Lonnie Nedderman will again serve as vice president. Board members approved the schedule of regular meetings for 2019, with the majority being held on the first Thursday of each month. Board members will be paid $125 per meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next meeting of the Vantage Career Center Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 7, in the board conference room.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
