{"id":112443,"date":"2019-01-25T23:29:21","date_gmt":"2019-01-26T04:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=112443"},"modified":"2019-01-26T05:52:45","modified_gmt":"2019-01-26T10:52:45","slug":"blackmore-d-lead-cougars-past-kenton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/01\/25\/blackmore-d-lead-cougars-past-kenton\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackmore, &#8216;D&#8217; lead Cougars past Kenton"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defense, balanced scoring and rebounding were on display during Van Wert\u2019s 56-34 Western Buckeye League victory over visiting Kenton on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Wert shot 48 percent (24 of 50) from the floor while holding the Wildcats to a mere 10 percent shooting in the first half and 28 percent (12 of 43) for the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lawson-Blackmore-1-26-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112449\"\/><figcaption><strong>Lawson Blackmore goes to the basket for two of his game high 17 points against Kenton.<\/strong><em> Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading 5-4 roughly halfway through the first quarter, the Cougars went on a 19-0 scoring run that didn\u2019t end until the 2:36 mark of the second quarter. Nate Place scored eight of those points, including two on a slam dunk. When the dust settled, Van Wert enjoyed a 24-5 halftime lead, with Kenton\u2019s only point of the second quarter coming on a free throw by Jaron Sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought our game plan was really solid on (Jayden) Cornell and Sharp,\u201d Van Wert head coach Mark Bagley said of his team\u2019s defensive effort. \u201cI thought Nate did a great job of keeping Cornell in front of him and then Blake (Henry) face guarded Sharp and did a really good job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFive points in a half in a WBL game is incredible against a team that\u2019s 9-3,\u201d Bagley added. \u201cWe did a lot of great things defensively that led to a layup-turnovers. I think Nate had three of them in the first half, so that set the tone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the Cougars held a decisive 29-16 rebounding advantage and had  four players in double figures, led by Lawson Blackmore\u2019s 17 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe told Lawson all week long to trust the process,\u201d Bagley said. \u201cLawson played an outstanding game and hit a three tonight which was fun for everybody to see that as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Blackmore, Place had 13, Owen Treece had 11 and Drew Bagley finished with 10. Sharp led Kenton with 14 points, with 10 of those coming in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Wert outscored Kenton 21-18 in the third quarter, with Treece knocking down three treys in the period and Blackmore scoring seven points.
