{"id":113138,"date":"2019-02-09T09:33:42","date_gmt":"2019-02-09T14:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=113138"},"modified":"2019-02-09T09:36:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-09T14:36:09","slug":"vwms-students-guests-read-book-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/02\/09\/vwms-students-guests-read-book-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"VWMS students, guests read book Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>DAVE MOSIER\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guest readers, including Van Wert City Schools\u2019 Assistant to the Superintendent Bill Clifton; Eric McCracken, owner of Lee Kinstle GM Sales &amp; Service; Rachel Hoverman of the Ohio State University Extension Office; Kelly Houg of the YWCA of Van Wert County; and Van Wert DARE Officer Greg Blackmore, all participated with Van Wert Middle School students in the school\u2019s One Book, One Day project on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/VWMS-Reading-program-2-8-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113139\"\/><figcaption><strong>Guest reader Eric McCracken of Lee Kinstle GM Sales &amp; Service reads a portion of <em>All of the Above<\/em> by Shelley Pearsall.<\/strong> Dave Mosier\/Van Wert independent<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During a school assembly, guest readers began reading the book,&nbsp;<em>All of the Above<\/em>by Shelley Pearsall, following a short video by the author in which she talked about writing the book, which is about an actual event where students at a Cleveland school came together to set a Guinness World Record for building the biggest tetrahedron &#8212; a geometric design that has a triangle on each of four sides &#8212; in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the assembly, guest readers talked about their own reading experiences, as did VWMS Principal Mark Bagley and VWMS teacher Ben Laudick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReading, to me, is one of the most important things I could ever do in my life,\u201d Bagley said to start off the assembly. \u201cI\u2019ll read a book over spring break; I\u2019ll read three books on the beach in July.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laudick, who explained that students would be reading the entire 237-page book on Friday, noted that students read every day, whether they know it or not, in their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of you read right before you went to your homeroom this morning,\u201d he noted. \u201cYou read a text message or something on your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clifton said he didn\u2019t really value reading when he was a student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t understand the importance of reading,\u201d Clifton noted, \u201cbut as I grew older, and as I look back now, I can tell you I agree 100 percent with Mr. Laudick: you are reading every day, whether it\u2019s a book, whether it\u2019s a magazine, whether it\u2019s off of your cell phone device, (or) whether it\u2019s off of your computer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>McCracken said that improving reading skills can also positively affect other subjects, noting that one of his sons needed help reading and, after he received it, his math and science grades also improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoverman, the wife of teacher Nate Hoverman, told students they should find a book they love that also makes them love reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI guarantee that there is a book that has already been written for every single kid in this room,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Houg, who is advocacy coordinator for the YWCA, said reading allows her to hear someone else\u2019s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReading, for me, offers me the same opportunity that my job does, because it allows you to hear a story about something you may or may not have ever been exposed to,\u201d Houg noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blackmore agreed about reading being a way to learn about other places, events, and situations they may not have been aware of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the things I love most about reading is the knowledge you can gain about anything that you want to know about,\u201d he said. \u201c(Maybe) you can\u2019t travel there, but you can be there in a book.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to reading the book, students also completed related projects, such as building their own tetrahedron.
