{"id":114307,"date":"2019-03-05T08:59:04","date_gmt":"2019-03-05T13:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=114307"},"modified":"2019-03-05T08:59:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T13:59:48","slug":"riedel-vwcs-bd-talk-report-cards-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/03\/05\/riedel-vwcs-bd-talk-report-cards-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Riedel, VWCS Bd. talk report cards, more"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent writer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s school report cards and school funding were among the topics the Van Wert City Board of Education discussed with State Representative Craig Riedel on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the special work session, Riedel (R-Defiance) listened as Superintendent Vicki Brunn and board members expressed frustration over the ever changing annual report cards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Craig-Riedel-3-5-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-114306\" width=\"366\" height=\"230\"\/><figcaption><strong>State Representative Craig Riedel (right) talks to members of the Van Wert City Board of Education about matters of interest during a work session of the board Monday afternoon.<\/strong> S<em>cott Truxell\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope we get to the point where we\u2019re measuring things that are talking about student achievement and success,\u201d Brunn said. \u201cAnother thing that bothers me, and this is personal bias, is what we need to do is prepare kids to be successful, not just at a four year college, but in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treasurer Mike Ruen also talked about the report card\u2019s annual change in assessment factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly unfair to the students and to the educators to get graded on something that you don\u2019t know is coming,\u201d Ruen stated. \u201cI think it\u2019s important to figure out what it needs to be and stick with it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it needs tweaked that\u2019s one thing, but it\u2019s so different year after year,\u201d Ruen added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Riedel responded by saying at some point, it may not be an issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the grade cards are going to go away,\u201d Riedel said. \u201cIf I had to bet on it right now, I\u2019d say it\u2019s just flat out going to go away. There are people who don\u2019t want them to go away and there are legislators who feel like we need to stick with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Riedel added that he would prefer to use a concept often referred to as \u201cDuffey\u2019s Dashboard\u201d, named after Mike Duffey (R-Worthington). His proposal would overhaul the report cards and would feature a layout showing more comparative data, instead of an A through F grade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the topic of school funding, Riedel explained that Representative Bob Cupp (R-Lima) and John Patterson (D-Jefferson) are working on a bill that could change the way things are done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not out there for everybody to look at yet, but Bob has told me he\u2019s really proud of the work they\u2019ve done on it and he\u2019s very optimistic that it\u2019s going to be a more fair way to fund our schools,\u201d Riedel said. \u201cWe\u2019ll get more details as we move through the spring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a related topic, Riedel told the board that new Governor Mike DeWine plans to focus on more funding for pre-kindergarten students and he noted DeWine is committed to addressing the opioid crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just seems like we\u2019re throwing money at it,\u201d Riedel said. \u201cTo me, when we talk about the opioid crisis, it all boils down to people within the community rallying to help one another and getting back to church to bring God back into our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other topics addressed during the meeting, which lasted over 90 minutes, included potential new graduation requirements, school safety and ways to pay for it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent writer The state\u2019s school report cards and school funding were among the topics the Van Wert City Board of Education discussed with State Representative Craig Riedel on Monday.
