{"id":117838,"date":"2019-05-14T06:56:11","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T11:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=117838"},"modified":"2019-05-14T06:56:17","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T11:56:17","slug":"brown-introduces-conflicted-trading-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/05\/14\/brown-introduces-conflicted-trading-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown introduces &#8216;conflicted trading&#8217; bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8212; U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) joined Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) last week to introduce the&nbsp;Ban Conflicted Trading Act, legislation that will prohibit members of Congress and senior congressional staff from abusing their positions for personal financial gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Brown-Sherrod-9-2011.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13164\"\/><figcaption><strong>Sherrod Brown<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMembers of Congress serve the American people, not their stock portfolios,\u201d&nbsp;said Brown.&nbsp;\u201cElected officials have access to nonpublic information that can affect individual companies and entire industries. There must be more accountability and transparency to prevent members from using this information and abusing their positions for personal gain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConflicted trading, in which legislators and top staff trade in stocks while making decisions affecting their value, is a blatant abuse of power,\u201d&nbsp;said Merkley.&nbsp;\u201cMembers of Congress and their staffs should be working for the American people, not abusing their public office to get rich.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown and Merkley&nbsp;introduced this bill last Congress&nbsp;in response to&nbsp;multiple scandals&nbsp;in recent years in which members of Congress were found buying and selling stocks in certain industries, while at the same time crafting legislation that affects those industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;Ban Conflicted Trading Act&nbsp;would bar members of Congress and senior congressional staff from buying or selling individual stocks and other investments, and from serving on any corporate boards, while in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New members would be allowed to sell individual holdings within six months of being elected, and sitting members of Congress would be allowed to sell individual holdings within six months after enactment of the bill. Alternatively, members of Congress could choose to hold existing investments while in office\u2014with no option for trading until they leave office\u2014or transfer them to a blind trust.
