Latta was joined by representatives from the Federal Trade Commission and the IRS\u2019s Taxpayer Advocate Service, and advocates for aging populations from multiple Ohio counties were in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop focused on common scams targeting America\u2019s seniors, including robocalls, internet pop-ups, mail schemes, and family financial abuse and neglect. In 2018, criminals stole more than\u00a0$37 billion from senior citizens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTC and Taxpayer Advocate Service representatives highlighted\u00a0resources available to seniors\u00a0and their advocates to prevent scams and report them when they occur. Several times during the question-and-answer portion of the workshop, attendees touched on not previously knowing that these resources were available to them. Latta also discussed legislation he\u2019s working on, the\u00a0STOP Robocalls Act,\u00a0which will make robocall blocking technology more accessible to the masses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking to see the financial and emotional toll that scams take on Ohio\u2019s seniors and their families,\u201d said Latta. \u201cIt\u2019s my hope that the information shared today will help people avoid becoming victims, and that they\u2019ll share the tips and tricks they learned with their friends and neighbors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to protect people from abuse, and that starts with education,\u201d Latta added. \u201cIt was encouraging to have so many intentional and motivated people in the audience &#8212; I know they\u2019ll help pass it on and become advocates.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Submitted information BOWLING GREEN &#8212;&nbsp;U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) hosted a Stopping Senior Scams Workshop at the Penta Career Center in Perrysburg Township.
