{"id":121949,"date":"2019-08-29T03:39:03","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T08:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=121949"},"modified":"2019-08-29T16:02:56","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T21:02:56","slug":"2019-pigskin-pickem-week-no-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/08\/29\/2019-pigskin-pickem-week-no-1\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Pigskin Pick&#8217;Em: Week No. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2019 high school football season is upon us and it brings with it the third year of Pigskin Pick\u2019Em.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each Thursday during the regular season, I\u2019ll go head-to-head with a guest selector, predicting winners of Western Buckeye League, Northwest Conference, Green Meadows Conference and Midwest Athletic Conference teams, along with Lima Sr. and Lima Central Catholic. A running total of wins and losses will be kept and will be updated each Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last season, I was 152-43 (78 percent), while the guest selectors were a combined 142-53 (73 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Pigskin Pick\u2019Em guest selector of the new season is Tracy Keber, Sr. Branch Office Administrator at Edward Jones, assistant volleyball coach at Lincolnview and an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>28 games are on the Week No. 1 schedule, and we differ on the outcome of seven of those games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The picks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Tracy-Keber-8-26-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-121951\"\/><figcaption><strong>Tracy Keber<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lima Senior vs. Lima Central Catholic:<\/strong> This game will be played tonight at Spartan Stadium and it\u2019s the first ever meeting on the gridiron between the two schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s certainly an intriguing matchup. Lima Sr. is a Division II team that went 2-8 last season, with one of those wins coming against a non-OHSAA school, COF Academy, while Lima Central Catholic is a Division VI school that went 9-2 and qualified for the playoffs in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m very tempted to take Lima Central Catholic, but I\u2019m picking Lima Sr., as is Keber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truxell: Lima Sr.; Keber: Lima Sr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><span>Van Wert at Bryan<\/span>:<\/b> Keber is going with Van Wert in this one and said \u201cI can&#8217;t go against the Cougs! We lost a great class to graduation but we have a good core group back and Owen Treece is a winner! He makes things happen and I believe he will lead the Cougs to a win.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s tough to argue with that, although I believe this has the potential to be a very interesting game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truxell: Van Wert; Keber: Van Wert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Crestview at Parkway:<\/strong> I have a feeling this is going to be a close one, but I think the Knights will find a way to win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keber is going with Parkway and said \u201cMy favorite cousin is coaching at Parkway this year, I&#8217;m picking the Panthers. Is that a legitimate enough reason?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll find out Friday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truxell: Crestview; Keber: Parkway<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Delphos Jefferson at Shawnee:<\/strong> Shawnee will have a new quarterback after the graduation of multi-sport star Johnny Caprella, but we believe the Indians will have too much for the Wildcats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keber said it should be closer than last year\u2019s game (49-0), but not enough for a Jefferson win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truxell: Shawnee; Keber: Shawnee<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Delphos St. John\u2019s at Elida:<\/strong> It\u2019s strange that Stadium Park will be empty on Friday night, but that\u2019s how the schedule worked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elida has the potential to be a real bear this season and while it\u2019s usually hard to bet against a MAC school, both of us think the Bulldogs will win this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truxell: Elida; Keber: Elida<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wayne Trace at Paulding:<\/strong> It\u2019s the 2019 edition of the Black Swamp Bowl between these Paulding County rivals, and it\u2019s another game that has the potential to be a close one.
