{"id":122121,"date":"2019-09-03T03:32:25","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T08:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=122121"},"modified":"2019-09-03T03:32:32","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T08:32:32","slug":"random-thoughts-hs-and-college-football","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/09\/03\/random-thoughts-hs-and-college-football\/","title":{"rendered":"Random Thoughts: HS and college football"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s Random Thoughts center around a state record, a huge game in the Western Buckeye League, some thoughts on college football, Dayton Dunbar, and Ohio State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Nine touchdowns<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perry high school quarterback Drew Schiano tied an Ohio High School Athletic Association record by throwing nine touchdown passes on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not Perry High School in Lima, but the Perry High School Pirates in Lake County. Regardless, it\u2019s very impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pirates needed all nine of Schiano\u2019s touchdown passes in a 63-54 win over Riverside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accomplishment ties a record by eight other players, including Colby Speice of Wayne Trace, Grant Sherman and Maty Mauk of Kenton, and James Elchinger, Ryan Radcliff and Kirk Jesse of Fairview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>WBL co-champs to meet<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This feels like it should be a Week No. 10 game on a permanent basis, but it doesn\u2019t work like that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defending Western Buckeye League co-champions St. Marys Memorial and Wapakoneta will meet at Harmon Field this Friday night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two teams met in Week No. 10 last season, when the Roughriders were 9-0 and the Redskins were 8-1. Wapak eked out a 26-24 win to force a co-championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friday night should be very interesting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Yikes<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several things I can say \u201cyikes\u201d to from the week\u2019s college football games \u2013 Tennessee\u2019s home loss to Georgia State; Purdue\u2019s loss to Nevada; Oregon\u2019s loss to Auburn; Idaho giving up 79 points to Penn State; Liberty coach Hugh Freeze coaching from his hospital bed (that\u2019s dedication), and Jalen Hurts scoring six touchdowns and going off for over 500 yards against Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m sure there\u2019s more, but you get the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dunbar<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you haven\u2019t heard, Dayton Dunbar\u2019s game against Cincinnati Roger Bacon came to an abrupt end when a Dunbar player intentionally head-butted an official. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dunbar was trailing 23-8 in the second quarter when the incident occurred. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t seen it, just Google Dayton Dunbar\u2013Roger Bacon football. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m guessing the young man involved is done for the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Ohio State offense<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, Ohio State beat Florida Atlantic 45-21. 28 of those points came in the first quarter, then the Buckeyes were actually outscored 21-17 the rest of the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The offense seemed inconsistent and play calling seemed strange at times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know, it was the first game of the season, but I\u2019m already a little concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully there will be some improvement against Cincinnati on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have thoughts on any of the above subjects, feel free to email me at <a href=\"mailto:sports@thevwindependent.com\">sports@thevwindependent.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent sports editor This week\u2019s Random Thoughts center around a state record, a huge game in the Western Buckeye League, some thoughts on college football, Dayton Dunbar, and Ohio State.
