{"id":125021,"date":"2019-11-20T04:56:25","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T09:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=125021"},"modified":"2019-11-20T04:56:50","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T09:56:50","slug":"hoops-preview-crestview-lady-knights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2019\/11\/20\/hoops-preview-crestview-lady-knights\/","title":{"rendered":"Hoops preview: Crestview Lady Knights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CONVOY &#8212; With four starters back, a transfer student and several others with varsity experience, Crestview appears poised to make a strong run toward the 2019-2020 Northwest Conference girls\u2019 basketball championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Mark-Gregory-2018-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111007\"\/><figcaption><strong>Mark Gregory<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Head coach Mark Gregory\u2019s returning starters from last year\u2019s 15-7 (6-2 NWC) team are 5-8 senior guard Lexi Gregory (14 points, five rebounds, three assists per game), 5-7 junior guard Olivia Cunningham (11 ppg), 5-6 junior guard Bailey Gregory (nine ppg) and 5-9 senior forward Kaylee Wolford (three rpg). The transfer student is 5-7 junior guard Kylie Etzler, who averaged seven points per game last year at Teays Valley High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving veteran players definitely helps with the process, and Kylie has been a great addition to our team,\u201d the fourth year head coach said. \u201cIt really helps, but we also have some new faces that need to get up to speed and get used to the physicality of high school basketball. It\u2019s going to be a fun year with a great group of girls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition to these girls, we have girls ready to step in and make our team better \u2013 Laci McCoy (5-9 freshman), Raegan Hammons (5-9 junior), Aleigh Chesbro (5-4 senior), Breena Grace (5-7 junior), Brynn Putnam (5-9 sophomore), Lexi Dull (5-8 junior), Mandy Macki (5-1 junior) and Emily Greulach 5-1 sophomore). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about this season with a mixture of veterans and new faces,\u201d Gregory said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing that Crestview doesn\u2019t have is overall size. The tallest players \u2013 Wolford, McCoy, Putnam and Hammons \u2013 are listed at 5-9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will be outsized it most games that we play, but I like our skill set,\u201d Gregory explained. \u201cOur girls have huge hearts and play bigger than they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gregory\u2019s assistant coaches are Kyle Hammons, Meghan Lautzenheiser and Becky Macki. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bluffton and Columbus Grove shared last year\u2019s NWC championship, with the Lady Knights and Spencerville sharing third place, and Gregory expects another tough conference race this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think our conference is as balanced as it ever has been, with lots of really good and well coached teams,\u201d Gregory said. \u201cWhoever wins it this year will have to make things happen on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crestview will open the season this weekend with a pair of home non-conference games \u2013 Fort Recovery on Friday and Ottoville on Saturday. Other non-conference games on the schedule include Parkway, Delphos St. John\u2019s, Fort Jennings, Kalida, Hicksville, Continental, Coldwater, Van Wert, Antwerp, Lima Central Catholic, Celina and Wayne Trace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have an extremely tough non-conference schedule,\u201d Gregory noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friday\u2019s game against Fort Recovery and Saturday\u2019s game versus Ottoville will air live on 99.7FM WKSD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent sports editor CONVOY &#8212; With four starters back, a transfer student and several others with varsity experience, Crestview appears poised to make a strong run toward the 2019-2020 Northwest Conference girls\u2019 basketball championship.
