{"id":127764,"date":"2020-02-04T04:51:50","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T09:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=127764"},"modified":"2020-02-04T04:51:56","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T09:51:56","slug":"random-thoughts-hoops-hockey-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2020\/02\/04\/random-thoughts-hoops-hockey-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Random Thoughts: hoops, hockey &#038; more"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s Random Thoughts center around a winning Saturday for Van Wert County\u2019s three boys basketball teams, ranked teams, the Super Bowl,  the XFL and a huge hockey fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Winner, winner, winner<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to Crestview, Lincolnview and Van Wert for posting impressive basketball wins on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say that Van Wert and Lincolnview went in as underdogs against Bryan and Delphos St. John\u2019s, while Crestview was considered pretty even with Hicksville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s hoping all three teams can keep the ball rolling this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Ranked teams<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two Western Buckeye League teams are ranked in the top five of the latest Associated Press boys basketball poll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shawnee (17-0) is up two spots to No. 3 in this week\u2019s Division II poll, while Ottawa-Glandorf (15-1) is down two spots to No. 4 in Division III. The Indians defeated the Titans last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Columbus Grove (14-0) is this week\u2019s No. 1 team in Division IV, switching spots with No. 2 New Boston Glenwood. Antwerp (16-0) is up three spots to No. 4, and Ottoville (14-3) jumped five spots to No. 12. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a bad showing for the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Super Bowl 54<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My prediction of the San Francisco 49ers winning Super Bowl 54 looked pretty good halfway through the fourth quarter, then the Kansas City Chiefs scored three times to lock up a 31-20 victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m happy for the Chiefs because it\u2019s nice to see smaller market teams win championships, and I\u2019m happy that Andy Reid finally got a Super Bowl title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a tough loss for the 49ers. Personally, I\u2019d rather lose by 40 than lose like that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>XFL<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other football fans, I\u2019ll give the XFL an obligatory look, and I hope it fares better than the AAF did last year. That league folded eight weeks into a ten week season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History hasn\u2019t been kind to pro leagues outside of the NFL, so we\u2019ll see what, if anything the XFL can do to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Komets fight<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Has anyone seen the fight between the Fort Wayne Komets and the Jacksonville Icemen? It happened on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve seen hockey fights before, but not like this.
