{"id":128796,"date":"2020-02-29T08:20:40","date_gmt":"2020-02-29T13:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=128796"},"modified":"2020-02-29T08:20:46","modified_gmt":"2020-02-29T13:20:46","slug":"latta-introduces-non-opioid-treatment-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2020\/02\/29\/latta-introduces-non-opioid-treatment-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Latta introduces non-opioid treatment bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.&nbsp;&#8212;&nbsp;This month, U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-5th District) introduced&nbsp;H.R.&nbsp;5833, legislation working to increase accessibility to non-opioid treatment for those suffering from chronic pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Latta-Bob-8-2012.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33253\"\/><figcaption><strong>Bob Latta<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are suffering from chronic pain often turn to opioids to alleviate their discomfort, which&nbsp;in some cases&nbsp;has led to a rise of misuse and abuse.&nbsp;Opioid alternatives, including certain medical devices and procedures, can provide relief without the risk of addiction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, treatments like spinal cord stimulation require psychological evaluations before receiving they can be utilized, and it can take patients several months before they are able to schedule an appointment. H.R. 5833 would allow these evaluations to be conducted using telehealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDue to the lack of medical services in rural areas, it can be difficult for people with chronic pain to travel long distances to access non-opioid therapies,\u201d&nbsp;said Latta. \u201cThis is especially true for treatments like spinal cord stimulation (SCS), which require a patient to get a psychological evaluation prior to receiving treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis extra step can further delay pain relief for patients living in remote areas with limited access to mental health services, Latta added. \u201cH.R. 5833 improves access to SCS, an FDA approved non-opioid pain relief therapy, by expanding the use of telehealth for a psychological evaluation.
