{"id":12890,"date":"2011-09-01T04:48:55","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T09:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/?p=12890"},"modified":"2011-09-01T04:48:55","modified_gmt":"2011-09-01T09:48:55","slug":"van-wert-county-fair-now-officially-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2011\/09\/01\/van-wert-county-fair-now-officially-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Van Wert County Fair now officially open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DAVE MOSIER\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 155th edition of the Van Wert County Fair got underway Wednesday with a ribboncutting &#8212; albeit without a ribbon &#8212; with fair and local officials on hand at 5 p.m. for the traditional opening of the fair <em>(see photo above).<\/em> The fair opening activities also included a flag-raising ceremony in front of the grandstand. Also Wednesday, the 4-H Style Revue and Modeling Awards event took place in the Entertainment Tent, while the ever-popular High School Band Show was also moved to Wednesday because of the shortening of this year\u2019s fair from seven to five days.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12891\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12891 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/VW-County-Fair-2011-1st-day-tattoo-contest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Judges check out tattoos as part of a new event held at this year&#039;s Van Wert County Fair. (Jan Dunlap\/Van Wert independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A nice crowd watched as a number of area high school marching bands strutted their stuff on the track in front of the grandstand.<\/p>\n<p>Also Wednesday, a new event, the \u201cWho Has the Best Tattoo in Northwest Ohio\u201d contest was held in the Entertainment Tent, starting at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Musical entertainment was also featured in the Entertainment Tent from 9:30-11:30 Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The rides and food vendors were also open following the official opening of the fair, while a baked goods auction was held in the Administration Building.<\/p>\n<p>Today is Senior Citizens Day and that means area residents who are at least 60 years old get into the fair free today. Seniors will also be treated to free entertainment by the groups Crossroads and \u201cHappy Days\u201d Band, as well as other performers, in the Entertainment Tent, from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Harness racing and pari-mutuel betting will also begin today, starting at 7 p.m. in front of the grandstand.<\/p>\n<p>On the Junior Fair side, the new Junior Fair king and queen will be crowned during a ceremony that begins at 6 p.m. in the Entertainment Tent.
