{"id":130548,"date":"2020-04-21T03:48:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-21T08:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=130548"},"modified":"2020-04-21T03:48:38","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T08:48:38","slug":"random-thoughts-2020-spring-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2020\/04\/21\/random-thoughts-2020-spring-sports\/","title":{"rendered":"Random Thoughts: 2020 spring sports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s Random Thoughts center completely around the COVID-19 induced cancellation of OHSAA spring sports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Schools<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor Mike DeWine made it official during Monday\u2019s press briefing \u2013 school buildings throughout Ohio will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement was expected, especially given the fact that President Donald Trump said on Thursday that all schools that are closed should remain closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision means spring sports have been canceled. Ohio High School Athletic Association Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass is expected to issue an official statement sometime today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tough, but correct<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may or may not agree with the decision to close schools and cancel spring sports. Either way, it wasn\u2019t an easy decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the circumstances, as painful as it is, it was probably the right decision. I know not everyone will agree with that and that\u2019s fine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Jerry Snodgrass<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve said it before and I\u2019ll said it again \u2013 I wouldn\u2019t want to be in this guy\u2019s shoes right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Snodgrass has been forced to make some tough and unpopular decisions over the past five weeks and he\u2019s taken a lot of heat. I myself have questioned the timing of some of his decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no way he or anyone else could have envisioned a scenario like this when he took over in 2018. No doubt it\u2019s been gut wrenching and emotional for him, perhaps more so for him than anyone else.<br>\nSeniors, student-athletes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, the decision is disappointing for student-athletes and especially seniors. It\u2019s a year of competition that has been taken away from them and quite honestly, it\u2019s not fair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know some people have said this can be a teaching moment about life and while that may be true, it still doesn\u2019t make it any less painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the coming days, we\u2019ll begin featuring senior spring sports athletes in a special way. It\u2019s the least we can do for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Fall sports<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s just hope fall sports aren\u2019t affected by COVID-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as a precaution, schools and OHSAA are taking steps to plan ahead, just in case. Hopefully, those plans won\u2019t be necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Summer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, it\u2019s hard to say exactly what this virus will do to summer activities, but it\u2019s probably safe to say it will affect them to some degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That includes volleyball, basketball and football passing camps and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio Legion baseball officials are planning to play this summer, but it remains to be seen when the season will start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACME baseball officials are also planning on playing during the summer months, but the timeline is up in the air. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s hoping we can get back to some sense of normalcy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have thoughts on any of the above topics, feel free to email me at <a href=\"mailto:sports@thevwindependent.com\">sports@thevwindependent.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent sports editor This week\u2019s Random Thoughts center completely around the COVID-19 induced cancellation of OHSAA spring sports.
