{"id":136912,"date":"2020-11-10T04:51:43","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T09:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=136912"},"modified":"2020-11-10T04:51:47","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T09:51:47","slug":"random-thoughts-semifinals-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2020\/11\/10\/random-thoughts-semifinals-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Random Thoughts: semifinals and more"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s edition of Random Thoughts includes some information about Cincinnati Wyoming, Van Wert\u2019s band, OHSAA semifinal sites and sports talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Impressive<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While preparing for Wednesday\u2019s preview, I came across some of Cincinnati Wyoming\u2019s numbers and they\u2019re very impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going back five seasons, the Cowboys are 61-3, while the only losses coming in last year\u2019s state championship game, plus regional championship losses to Clinton-Massie and Kettering Alter in 2017 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Cincinnati Wyoming has won 47 straight regular season games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Band<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019ll be nice to see Van Wert\u2019s marching band perform at the state semifinals. It\u2019ll be the first road performance of the season for the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Road trip<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oddly enough, Saturday\u2019s trip to Piqua will be the shortest of Van Wert\u2019s four road playoff games. Usually state semifinal games are the longest trips, but that\u2019s not the case here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cougars traveled something like 800 miles for three playoff games, which is probably more than any team left in the postseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Nice job<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s give credit where credit is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In this COVID-19 environment, the Ohio High School Athletic Association did a nice job of finding neutral sites to host this week\u2019s state semifinal football games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sites being used are very good ones, perhaps a little better than I thought they\u2019d be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, kudos to those sites for stepping up to host as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Big 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a topsy-turvy year in the Big 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indiana is 3-0, Penn State is 0-3 and Michigan is 1-2? Who saw that coming?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Nebraska just can\u2019t seem to turn things around, which is a little surprising.
