That\u2019s because PPEC\u2019s Board of Trustees recently approved to return $2.2 million to the cooperative\u2019s current and former members. Eligible members will see a credit on their December electric bill. The money is being returned to members in the form of\u00a0capital credits, also known as profits or margins.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/PPEC-money-artwork-11-2020.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-137761\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>PPEC is&nbsp;a not-for-profit, community-focused organization. One of PPEC\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ppec.coop\/cooperative-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7 Cooperative Principles<\/a>&nbsp;is \u201cMembers\u2019 Economic Participation,\u201d which means members contribute equitably to the capital of the co-op in which they are part-owners. The unique part of the co-op model means members also receive a financial return on their capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSimply put, this means that PPEC members contribute a portion of the capital necessary to grow the co-op and upgrade electric reliability,\u201d stated PPEC President and CEO George Carter. \u201cEventually, as the co-op is financially able to do so, the board approves the capital be returned, or \u2018retired\u2019 back to those members who contributed it originally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including this year\u2019s capital credits return, PPEC has returned more than $27 million to its members. According to Carter, this process is what sets PPEC apart from other utilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not in business to make a profit for shareholders \u2013 we don\u2019t have any because of our co-op model,\u201d Carter said. \u201cIf there is leftover money, we give it back to members.
