{"id":139898,"date":"2021-02-04T22:53:20","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T03:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=139898"},"modified":"2021-02-04T22:55:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T03:55:17","slug":"cunningham-leads-knights-by-lincolnview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2021\/02\/04\/cunningham-leads-knights-by-lincolnview\/","title":{"rendered":"Cunningham leads Knights by Lincolnview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent sports editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crestview\u2019s Olivia Cunningham was simply too much for Lincolnview on Thursday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 5-6 senior guard poured in 28 points and the Lady Knights (15-3, 6-1 NWC) picked up their fifth consecutive victory with a 55-40 win over their county rivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOlivia Cunningham really hurt us,\u201d Lincolnview head coach Kyle Williams said. \u201cWe really wanted to key in on Gregory and Cunningham but Cunningham attacked the rim well, rebounded well and knocked down some big shots. She did anything she wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"286\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Olivia-Cunningham-2-4-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-139896\"\/><figcaption>Not even a triple team defense could slow down Crestview&#8217;s Olivia Cunningham (23), who finished with 28 points against Lincolnview. <em>Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Cunningham scored five points in the first quarter and Crestview led 14-7 at the end of the period, then she accounted for eight of her team\u2019s 11 second quarter points and the Lady Knights led 25-19 at halftime. Lincolnview\u2019s Makayla Jackman hit a pair of triples in the second quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lincolnview (7-13, 1-6 NWC) was able to cut the lead to four twice in the early part of the third quarter, 25-21 and 27-23, but a bucket by Laci McCoy, then a steal and layup by Cunningham quickly pushed the score to 31-23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was huge,\u201d Crestview head coach Mark Gregory said. \u201cWe gave up some scores but we were able answer right back. We\u2019ve been in some situations this year where we\u2019ve gotten down and had to come back and we\u2019ve gotten in some situations where we\u2019ve gotten the lead and let them back a little bit and this was one of those nights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three pointers by McCoy, Bailey Gregory and Cunningham helped extend the lead to 42-29, before Kendall Bollenbacher and Zadria King each hit baskets to make it 42-33 at the end of the period. McCoy finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while King tallied 10 points and six rebounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After going 1-of-10 from three point range in the first half, Crestview was 3-of-4 in the third quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe moved the basketball, we were patient, we didn\u2019t take the first shot we had in the second half and I thought that was huge for us,\u201d Gregory offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cunningham opened the fourth quarter two quick baskets and a pair of free throws, and the Lady Lancers weren\u2019t able to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCredit coach Williams, his staff and his team,\u201d Gregory said. \u201cThey played hard and it felt like a tournament atmosphere game, but I\u2019m really proud of our girls \u2013 they stepped up tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the loss, Williams said he\u2019s pleased with his team\u2019s progress, especially during the second half of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud of the girls\u2019 efforts as of late,\u201d Williams stated. \u201cWe are playing together and competing hard we just have to knock down shots.
