This week\u2019s edition of Random Thoughts centers around high school spring sports, Major League Baseball, the NCAA tournament, Indiana basketball and the NFL. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring sports<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome back spring sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After last year\u2019s high school spring sports season was canceled by COVID-19, it\u2019s nice to see baseball, softball, track and field and tennis back now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019ll be a pleasure to cover the games and events over the next couple of months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MLB<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll admit it \u2013 I\u2019m not as big of a Major League Baseball fan as I used to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something\u2019s changed over the years. Perhaps it\u2019s the game, perhaps it\u2019s me, perhaps it\u2019s both, but I just don\u2019t feel the same about it anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having said that, I still enjoy it, just not at the diehard level from many years ago. I\u2019ll always root for the Cleveland Indians (or whatever their new name will be) and for the Cincinnati Reds, as long as they\u2019re not playing the Indians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While my feelings have changed, I\u2019m still very much looking forward to Opening Day, which in my book is one of the most exciting days in all of sports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s another sure sign of spring and in these times, another step toward normalcy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NCAA tournament<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it\u2019s because we were deprived of the NCAA tournament last year, but this year\u2019s tournament seems extra enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the mainstays aren\u2019t there \u2013 Duke, Kansas, Kentucky \u2013 but that\u2019s okay. It\u2019s fun to root for the underdog and the lower seeds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gonzaga is clearly the best team in the tournament but the best team doesn\u2019t always win. It\u2019ll be interesting to see if they can run the table or if this is the year of the underdog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana hoops<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana has a new men\u2019s basketball coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it just me or does it seem Mike Woodson wasn\u2019t exactly at the top of the list? Does a six-year contract seem like it\u2019s a bit of a reach for a guy who\u2019s never coached a college game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are huge differences between the pro and college games. In college it\u2019s all about recruiting and in the pros a big chunk of it is managing egos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who knows, maybe it\u2019ll work out for the Hoosiers, but this seems destined to not end well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears the NFL is on the verge of adding a game and going to a 17-game regular season schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the players don\u2019t seem too thrilled about it and I guess it\u2019s understandable, giving the punishing nature of the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, no one is forcing them to play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
