{"id":141623,"date":"2021-04-03T05:57:30","date_gmt":"2021-04-03T10:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=141623"},"modified":"2021-04-03T06:00:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-03T11:00:07","slug":"jury-finds-woman-guilty-in-childs-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2021\/04\/03\/jury-finds-woman-guilty-in-childs-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury finds woman guilty in child&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Van Wert independent staff<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LIMA &#8212; A jury on Friday found Convoy resident Vicky Shellabarger guilty of three of four counts related to the death of her 22-month-old daughter, Madilynn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Maddy-Shellabarger-headshot-3-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-141402\"\/><figcaption>Madilynn Shellabarger<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the jury deadlocked on whether Shellabarger, 38, was guilty of murder, it returned guilty verdicts on one count of involuntary manslaughter, a felony of the first degree, as well as second- and third-degree counts of child endangering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defendant faces a maximum sentence of 32 years in prison on the charges. Sentencing will be held on May 24 in Allen County Common Pleas Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shellabarger was indicted in June 2018 in the death of her young daughter, which occurred three months earlier on April 29 of that year. First-responders discovered that the young girl was not breathing and was unresponsive when Shellabarger called them to the Delphos apartment of her then-boyfriend shortly after midnight on the 29th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madilynn died later that same day at St. Rita\u2019s Medical Center in Lima of external and internal injuries from what investigators called \u201cblunt force trauma\u201d &#8212; being severely beaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial had been delayed from its original date of March 24, 2020, while several requests were filed by\u00a0Shellabarger&#8217;s attorney Stephen Chamberlain to dismiss the case because of alleged legal improprieties.
