After that, the two teams played a controlled scrimmage with alternating possessions of 10 plays each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Connor-Pratt-August-13-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-144786\"\/><figcaption>Van Wert&#8217;s Connor Pratt races to the end zone after catching a 50-yard pass from Aidan Pratt during Friday&#8217;s scrimmage against Crestview. <em>Bob Barnes\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the official scoring came before the delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Ethan Brown ended Crestview\u2019s first possession by intercepting a Carson Hunter pass, the Cougars used just one play to score. Pratt lofted a perfect 50-yard strike to Connor Pratt for the first touchdown of the scrimmage, but the extra point was blocked by the Knights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has such a strong arm and that\u2019s the nice thing, he can sit in the pocket and can see the whole field,\u201d Van Wert head coach Keith Recker said. \u201cHe has a real good understanding of the offense, so that\u2019s good and I think he\u2019ll continue to get better on the short and intermediate throws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crestview fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Van Wert took over at the Knight 30. Pratt ended a quick four-play drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Garett Gunter and Connor Pratt\u2019s PAT was good, giving the Cougars a 13-0 lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the two teams traded punts, Crestview drove 86 yards in 14 plays and scored on a five yard run by Nick Helt. On the drive, Helt logged six carries for 25 yards and caught a 10-yard pass that set up the touchdown. He finished the scrimmage with 12 carries and 58 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNick Helt was voted team captain this week in a landslide,\u201d Crestview head coach James Lautzenheiser said. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to be the heart and soul of this team and he\u2019s a kid that I\u2019ve had the pleasure of working with since he was a fourth grade ball boy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Carson-Hunter-8-13-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-144787\"\/><figcaption>Carson Hunter fires a pass for the Knights.<em> Bob Barnes photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gunter returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards and the Cougars capped another four play drive with a two-yard run by Jackson, then Van Wert\u2019s next driive ended with Jackson\u2019s second touchdown, this time from three yards out, putting the Cougars ahead 27-7 with 6:37 left in the second quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final two scores came when Carter Miller returned a shanked punt 10 yards for a touchdown and when Pratt connected with a wide open Brown from 54 yards out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pratt unofficially finished 8-of-13 for 184 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. In addition to touchdown catches by Connor Pratt and Bbrown, Maddix Crutchfield had three receptions for 36 yards and Gunter had a pair of catches for 42 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson finished with eight carries for 29 yards and two scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the controlled portion of the scrimmage, Van Wert backup quarterback Carson Smith sprinted 75 yards for a touchdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunter completed 4-of-10 passes for 60 yards, including two to Hunter Rothgeb for 42 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of some injuries coming into tonight\u2019s contest we had some shakeups in the lineup and that\u2019s good for us to deal with that adversity,\u201d Lautzenheiser said. \u201cHunter stepped up and did a pretty good job. He had a throw I\u2019d love for him to take back in that first quarter but I think he would too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think he grew up tonight in a lot of ways and I\u2019m glad that we had that situation now than a couple of weeks from now,\u201d Lautzenheiser added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lautzenheiser also said he\u2019d like to see improvement in the secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pleased with the overall result, Recker said the Cougars have room for improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToo many penalties and we had so many times when we weren\u2019t aligned correctly on defense,\u201d Recker stated. \u201cThat stuff is frustrating, especially not getting aligned properly.
