{"id":148383,"date":"2021-11-18T04:12:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-18T09:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=148383"},"modified":"2021-11-19T04:52:48","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T09:52:48","slug":"van-wert-school-board-hears-about-finances-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2021\/11\/18\/van-wert-school-board-hears-about-finances-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"VW school board hears about finances"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Wert City Schools will be in the black for the next five years, according to the latest financial forecast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"353\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Scott-Mull-11-17-2021-e1637315484451.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-148391\"\/><figcaption>Board member Scott Mull listens to information about the district&#8217;s five year forecast. <em>Scott Truxell\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treasurer Michelle Mawer delivered the good news during Wednesday night\u2019s Board of Education meeting but she tempered it by noting projected revenues will be flat and deficit spending will occur starting with fiscal year 2023, with the carryover balance covering the deficit. She also noted the state\u2019s new funding model could change things and she said she hasn\u2019t seen the new model, which was supposed to be unveiled last month but was delayed until December or January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe forecast is a picture in time,\u201d Mawer said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know with having state bi-annual budgets and there\u2019s a lot a lot of things that can happen between now and fiscal year 2024 and 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board approved the forecast as required by law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his report to the board, superintendent Mark Bagley said he\u2019s hoping to fill some empty staffing spots by next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is graduation at colleges in December so we\u2019re really hoping that process will allow us to finish out the year,\u201d Bagley stated. \u201cIt\u2019s challenging right now to find substitutes for any job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bagley informed the board that Van Wert\u2019s current student population is 2,144 and he noted Goedde students and staff put on a Thanksgiving dinner for the community on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>He also noted Tuesday\u2019s Eggerss Stadium renovation meeting in Ohio City was a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey asked great questions and it was really good to do that,\u201d Bagley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High school principal Bob Priest and assistant principal Ryan Parrish did a presentation on PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) and the board heard a lengthy presentation from assistant superintendent Bill Clifton about the district\u2019s school safety plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just three personnel items were on the agenda. The board accepted the resignation of Matthew Miller as girls\u2019 head soccer coach and Ashley Saam as a bus driver. The board also approved a supplemental contract for Jacque Welch as winter cheerleading coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of new and revised board policies, including early graduation, student hazing, attendance and student records, were given approval by the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board accepted several different donations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$36.06 from Ohiopyle Prints to the high school principal\u2019s fund. <\/li><li>$142.97 from Pel Industries to the high school principals\u2019s fund. <\/li><li>$2,500 from Devin and Samantha Webster to the wrestling program. <\/li><li>$792 from Van Wert Elementary PTO for an Early Childhood Center field trip. <\/li><li>$6,614.60 from Lifehouse Church to held students in need. <\/li><li>$200 from St. Paul\u2019s Reformed Church in America Women\u2019s Fellowship to help elementary students in need.  <\/li><li>$13,746.41 from the Van Wert Football Tailgate Tour \u201cThe Recking Crew\u201d reverse raffle to benefit athletic facilities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The board scheduled the January organizational meeting for 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, followed by the regular meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next meeting of the Van Wert City Schools Board of Education will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, in the First Federal Lecture Hall at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTT TRUXELL\/independent editor Van Wert City Schools will be in the black for the next five years, according to the latest financial forecast.
