With 2022 underway, the Van Wert General Health District is recognizing the great service volunteers who help out at the weekly COVID-19 clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had a large group of volunteers, nursing staff and clerical staff that stepped up to help us with these clinics,\u201d Van Wert County General Health District Administrator Jeanette Konz said. We could not do what we\u2019re doing for the public without them,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent weeks, the clinics have been held from 12-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds, behind the OSU Extension offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you first come in you might be greeted by long time volunteer Linda Stanley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday I\u2019m going to be greeting people that come in,\u201d Stanley recently said. \u201cIf they\u2019re a second shot person, I\u2019ll look at my files. Most of our people will be in for the booster shots\u2026I tell them how to fill it out then they take it after they\u2019re done over to the girls at the other station.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanley is a former teacher who taught at Vantage Career Center for 29 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, I retired and I had time on my hands and I wanted to help the community out and I thought this is a good way to do it,\u201d Stanley explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next you might speak with Luanne Watson who checks over the paperwork and makes copies of insurance cards, IDs, or birth certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Watson became a volunteer after a friend put out a plea for extra people to help out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m retired so I have extra time on my hands,\u201d Watson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of people coming out to get vaccinated has been dwindling and that\u2019s a bit disappointing to Watson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would like to see more people getting their vaccines so I think it would help get this under control,\u201d Watson said. \u201cNot everybody feels that way,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jane Oechsle sits next to Watson and also helps check people\u2019s paperwork. A mutual friend also urged her to help out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe same way Luanne did, her same friend, and we heard that they needed help and we volunteered,\u201d Oechsle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kathy Schaadt volunteers her time to administer the vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI retired from my nursing job about a year ago and I wanted to do some volunteer stuff and I have a huge passion for getting shots into people\u2019s arms and I thought this would be the best way to do it and I absolutely love it,\u201d Schaadt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sees what it\u2019s like to be a front-line medical worker and sees the benefits of getting the COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convincing others is not the easiest thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome of them you just can\u2019t convince,\u201d Schaadt stated. \u201cSocial media has played a big role in this and it\u2019s hard to convince some people. They just have a true belief that it\u2019s harmful or they don\u2019t trust it and you know you can just give the facts and hope they make the right decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrust in the science,\u201d Schaadt continued. \u201cVaccinations do work and I try to show them that it worked in the past you know with smallpox, polio, measles. We don\u2019t hesitate getting our kids vaccinated so why hesitate on this? Just get your vaccinations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
