{"id":151892,"date":"2022-03-02T04:43:21","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T09:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=151892"},"modified":"2022-03-03T04:49:12","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T09:49:12","slug":"weigle-promoted-to-vwpd-top-spot-boroff-to-lt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2022\/03\/02\/weigle-promoted-to-vwpd-top-spot-boroff-to-lt\/","title":{"rendered":"Weigle sworn in as new Van Wert Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Van Wert has a new police chief and he\u2019s no stranger to the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With family, friends, city officials and emloyees and other law enforcement officers looking on, Doug Weigle was officially sworn in by Mayor Ken Markward during a short ceremony held Tuesday afternoon at the Municipal Building. He\u2019s replacing former Chief Joel Hammond, who retired last Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Doug-Weigle-oath-3-1-2022-e1646300861630.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-151888\"\/><figcaption>Mayor Ken Markward administers the oath to new Van Wert Police Chief Doug Weigle, while Weigle&#8217;s wife Tammie holds the Bible. <em>Scott Truxell\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Weigle has spent his entire law enforcement career with the Van Wert Police Department and has been a full time officer since 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI made sergeant in about two years and a few years later I made lieutenant,\u201d Weigle said. \u201cI\u2019ve been with Chief Hammond for at least 12 years and have that experience with him and we worked very well together. He did very well (training), probably more than most supervisors would do and let me start a leadership team, so I really do appreciate him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weigle said his immediate goal as chief is to continue to help enforce city ordinances, including ongoing cleanup efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to enforce those laws with people who don\u2019t want to clean up,\u201d Weigle stated. \u201cI started that effort last year and really tried to get the word out that we were doing it. I went one guy\u2019s house and stacked his wood and mowed his yard for him because he had a bad back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really don\u2019t want to make people pay fines, I just want them to come in compliance,\u201d Weigle added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weigle will oversee a force that currently has 18 full time officers and two reserve officers, with three full time slots that are open and he said another short term goal is to fill the three vacant spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to get anybody to take the civil service test with the climate lately,\u201d Weigle said. \u201cThe good thing this town is we\u2019re pretty well supported and always have been, so I\u2019m hoping we can get some good applicants. I would love to fill those spots as soon as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would also like to get more reserves going,\u201d Weigle added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Weigle took the oath, Sgt.
