The legislation will help mothers of young children be relieved of jury duty responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Juror-Exemption-Bill-Filing.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162916\"\/><figcaption>State Representatives Angie King and Roy Klopfenstein have introduced their first piece of legislation. <em>Photo submitted<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Under current law, there are only a few exemptions for mothers and for jurors that are suffering from a disease or illness. This legislation will create a new exemption for breastfeeding mothers to be excused from jury duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pleased to introduce my first bill, especially something that has come from a young mother who was forced to make the decision between complying with jury duty or taking care of her child,\u201d Klopfenstein said. \u201cThis early time in development is vital for forming bonds between mother and child and disruption during this time can affect the well-being of both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For mothers to apply for the exemption, the legislation would require them to submit a signed affidavit to the court to be excused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is very simple legislation that looks to provide better development for mothers and their children,\u201d King said. \u201cWe see a simple issue that may have been overlooked when the original exemptions were created and want to make sure the problem is corrected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation has not been assigned to a committee yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klopfenstein represents the 82nd House District, which includes all of Paulding, Putnam and Van Wert counties and the southern portion of Defiance County. King represents the 84th House District, which includes all of Mercer County and parts of Darke and Auglaize counties.
