{"id":163372,"date":"2023-02-24T04:50:15","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T09:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=163372"},"modified":"2023-02-25T00:36:47","modified_gmt":"2023-02-25T05:36:47","slug":"contract-talks-underway-board-hears-eggerss-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2023\/02\/24\/contract-talks-underway-board-hears-eggerss-update\/","title":{"rendered":"VW teacher contract talks underway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SCOTT TRUXELL\/<\/strong><em>independent editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contract negotiations are underway beween the Van Wert City Schools and Van Wert Federation of Teachers No. 4088.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Wednesday night\u2019s Van Wert City Schools Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Mark Bagley said the first negotiation session with the union representing the district\u2019s teachers was a fruitful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a great process, it\u2019s been a collaborative process,\u201d Bagley stated. \u201cWe\u2019ve had one day and we got a lot of tentative agreements and next Wednesday we\u2019ll continue that journey and we\u2019ll be going to salaries and benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Bill-Clifton-2-23-2023-e1677303377318.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-163379\"\/><figcaption>Assistant Superintendent Bill Clifton talks about sanitary sewer work at Eggerss Stadium. <em>Scott Truxell\/Van Wert independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The current three-year contract with district teachers expires this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bagley also told the board that, after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, a trip for 92 Van Wert Middle School eighth graders and 10 adult chaperones to Washington, D.C., is scheduled for March 7-10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great part of our curriculum and I\u2019m really glad from our aspect of the school experience,\u201d Bagley said. \u201cFor many kids when you go to graduation, a lot of kids say the D.C. trip was the highlight of their educational career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Superintendent Bill Clifton provided a brief update on work at Eggerss Stadium, noting sanitary sewer work is starting at the site, and Bagley added once that part of the project is done, the more visible work will begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe turf will go down when the ground is appropriate \u2026 April 1 is that goal date,\u201d Bagley explained. \u201cWe are down to interviewing our final two for concrete restoration. (We need to) make sure we have handrails, to make sure (the concrete) is sealed properly and there are a lot decisions we have to make whether it\u2019s seating, whether it\u2019s putting bleachers back on, new, used, refurbished \u2014 but the most important thing, the first step is to choose a concrete restoration company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meeting to make the decision will take place within a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>During his report to the board, Clifton said the 2024-2025 school calendar will be on the March agenda for a vote and he noted memorandums of understanding were reached with the Van Wert Police Department, the Van Wert Fire Department and the Van Wert County Sheriff\u2019s Office to gain access to school camera security feeds. Those MOUs were approved later in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his report, Treasurer Troy Bowersock said revenues and expenditures are tracking close to amounts anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Board members also heard a brief presentation by advanced placement computer science teacher Cole Harting and students Sofi Houg and Emma Wallace, who created a new app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other business the board:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Renewed membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association. <\/li><li>Approved the purchase of two 78 passenger buses for $238,475. <\/li><li>Approved the middle school trip to Washington D.C. <\/li><li>Approved a sponsorship agreement with Mercy Health-St. Rita\u2019s. <\/li><li>Approved a TIF agreement and a compensation agreement for Jennings Crossing LLC. <\/li><li>Approved with thanks a lengthy list of donations totaling thousands of dollars.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The board also met in executive session to discuss the employment of public personnel and employee negotiations.
