{"id":168419,"date":"2023-07-28T20:11:47","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T01:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/?p=168419"},"modified":"2023-07-28T20:11:48","modified_gmt":"2023-07-29T01:11:48","slug":"grants-available-to-volunteer-fire-depts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/2023\/07\/28\/grants-available-to-volunteer-fire-depts\/","title":{"rendered":"Grants available to volunteer fire depts."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Submitted information<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBUS &#8212; Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Bureau of Workers\u2019 Compensation (BWC) Administrator John Logue have announced that local volunteer fire departments are now eligible to receive up to $15,000 in grants to pay for firefighting safety gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a recommendation from Governor DeWine\u2019s Ohio Volunteer Fire Service Task Force, BWC has now broadened eligibility for its Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements Grants (FEEEG) to include emergency response &#8220;turnout&#8221; gear for local volunteer fire departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/thevwindependent.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Mike-DeWine-headshot-3-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-114781\"\/><figcaption>Mike DeWine<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe safety of our first responders in Ohio is a top priority,\u201d DeWine said. &#8220;Making this equipment more accessible to volunteer fire departments will help protect firefighters who are dedicated to the critical work of serving their local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this change to FEEEG eligibility, volunteer fire departments can now apply for up to $15,000 every three years for firefighting gear such as trousers, boots, suspenders, and jackets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know the impact minimizing exposure to dangerous environmental elements has on the safety and health of firefighters,\u201d Logue said. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen this program positively impact fire departments throughout Ohio and we are proud this expansion will protect more Ohioans for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor DeWine created the Ohio Volunteer Fire Service Task Force in April, 2022 to study volunteer fire service in Ohio. The group was chaired by State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon and comprised of local elected officials and firefighters from across the state.
